The Food Therapy Podcast

Aug 15, 2021

In this episode you’ll hear:
  • Brittany and Lauren explore a range of issues under the idea of “mindful movement.” What is mindful movement, why do people get turned off by exercise after years of chronic dieting? What are some of the mental and physical benefits of movement? (2:13)
  • Brittany and Lauren shares what their relationship with exercise looked like in the past, as as child and as they grew older (3:12)
  • There is a spectrum to movement and exercise. But how does chronic dieting impact your relationship with exercise? Diet culture has turned exercise into losing weight and presenting a physical appearance. When you focus more on the aesthetic you lose the real benefits of working out as you tend to stop half way through  (11:12)
  • Rather than focus on the physical appearance element of working out, we should shift how we view exercise as a movement that benefits our life more holistically (15:18)
  • Many people praise HIIT training, but is there a downside? Some studies show that HIIT training can increase our cortisol and impact our sleep (19:10)
  • Mindful movement is movement that is attuned to how your body is feeling. What are you experiencing at the moment and what movement can you choose that benefits your body? Taking care of yourself doesn’t always involve breaking an immense sweat and pushing yourself (20:56)
  • Being in touch with your body also means recognizing that your body needs rest. This can look like not forcing your body to do something it doesn’t want to do, and connecting your body signals. Lauren and Brittany share what this looks like and what things you can do to help you move (25:36)
  • Pairing movement with a hangout or with a partner has immense benefits and is a great way to motivate yourself to move and also help addressing compulsive exercising habits (28:08)
  • How does compulsive exercising impact our lives and our relationship with our body and quality of life? (29:49)
  • It's important to recognize that the amount we move from day to day will fluctuate. Having the flexibility to realize that some days will be more active than others is totally okay! (34:16)
